Collingwood's Nottawasaga Lighthouse

You may have noticed my drawing of the Nottawasaga Lighthouse on both my business card and my website. I am rather partial to lighthouses and to the one that guides boats to the entrance of the Collingwood Harbour. It is know as the Nottawasaga Lighthouse because it is a the northwest corner of Nottawasaga Bay.

I was so impressed by the cover photo of our Lighthouse and article in the Fall 2008 issue of On the Bay magazine, that I wrote a letter to the editor. They published it in the Winter issue. Here it is -

Hi – I was very pleased to see the Feature Article and Cover Photo of our poor dilapidated Collingwood Lighthouse.

I believe that if our community showed support for the restoration of the Lighthouse, it would be easier for Jim Kilgour to get the Government to pay for restoring it.

I play with the Georgian Sound Big Band. I think there should be an Annual Fund Raising Dance, for the Nottawasaga Lighthouse. It could be held at either the Collingwood Legion or the Beaver Valley Community Centre. When the Georgian Sound Big Band “hosts” an event like the up-coming Harvest Moon Dance, members of the Band organize the whole event, with the help of a few volunteers. Too big a work and responsibility load is carried by Doreen Norris, so she is not prepared to have the Band host a “Fund Raiser for the Lighthouse”.

What needs to happen is an individual or group or service club, organize the dance and the Band can come and perform for the listening and dancing pleasure of the audience. We did do a dance and silent auction for the Katrina Hurricane disaster in New Orleans and we raised over $3,000.

I am hoping that your feature article will serve as a “catalyst” to get the ball rolling and get our community behind the restoration of the Nottawasaga Lighthouse.
